Hyde Park View

bow tie maxi dress

The view at Hyde Park. Let's just take a moment to appreciate how spectacular it is. Are you done? Are you imagining how it would look in the fall? Yeah, me too. I literally said that every few minutes during our time at Hyde Park, New York and all along the Hudson. While I do plan on sharing a little travel post to tell you all about our adventures at the home of FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt, let me tell you about what I wore, because, well, that's what I do here!

I bought this incredibly light (and easily packed in a weekender) orange-coral dress and hung it in my closet, waiting for a special occasion. Then I remembered that Celebrating This Life means celebrating any and every moment and not saving for a special occasion (drink the champagne, use the fancy china, you get the idea). While packing for our trip though the Catskills and Hudson Valley I decided to pack this maxi dress with a cute bow on the neck and vowed to wear it.

I got the opportunity when I ended up sunburnt on my right arm and couldn't put any clothing on my shoulders! That's right, the lady that is always telling everyone to put on their SPF did not take her own advice. It was our first road trip in our 1970 Mercury Montego and since the 47 year old car does not have air conditioning we had the windows down the entire trip. Even when the temperatures rose to 33 degrees celsius or 91 fahrenheit! I just wasn't used to going "old school" with my arm hung out the window and I'm paying for it. It was so bad the first night that I slept with a cold cloth on my arm but the heat died down the next morning, just in time for our visit to Hyde Park. I tried my best to angle myself so the sunburn wouldn't be noticeable but let's face it, it's a big red beacon! Oh well, that's #reallife.

The dress turned out to be the perfect mix of dressing up and comfort. We spent the morning driving to Sleepy Hollow, NY and back to Hyde Park for lunch and we spent the rest of the day touring FDR's Presidential Library, museum and home. We had dinner across from Hyde Park and even managed to see a movie at their little local theatre (Atomic Blonde, it wasn't for me). Thanks to the heatwave we experienced, this maxi turned out to be the best dress I could have worn! It is so light and breezy and most importantly, stayed off my sun burnt shoulder! Oh, and did I mention it has pockets? Yeah it does and my cell phone was in my pocket in everyone of these photos! I was on a constant search for WiFi!

If you caught my Instagram stories last week you saw a few photos from the tour, I'll share more soon! The home is just the way FDR left it when he passed in 1945. I was surprised to see that FDR's family and my family share the same decorating style! Dark wood, leather chairs and lots of blue and white, I just loved it. After touring the home we exited out the back to my favourite part, the outside area overlooking the Hudson River. What an awe inspiring view! No wonder FDR loved this home so much!
  1. That view looks amazing! There are few things more beautiful to me than staring out into a vast distance where all you can see are tree tops. Also, loving your dress! It's such a gorgeous color and looks like the perfect summer dress to wander in!

    1. Hahaha, thanks for your concern! Luckily it didn't hurt for too long and I made sure I was well coated in SPF for the rest of the trip :D xx
