Fall In Kirkcudbright

On a grey and rainy day, we decided to head south of Glasgow to the coastal town of Kirkcudbright. This small town (population is less than 4000) is anything but. The town boasts some of the most amazing views of the Isle of Man, a castle, colourful homes, public art everywhere and some amazing shopping.
AMH and I visited Kirkcudbright last spring and we really enjoyed ourselves. I think this is a place we will find ourselves visiting many more times. For such a small town, there really is a lot to see!

Last spring we didn't get the opportunity to see inside MacLellan's Castle and we thought we would miss it again on this trip as they traditionally close in September. As luck would have it, this is the first October in nine years that they have opted to stay open in October! We quickly purchased tickets and a guide book and set out to see what remains of this late 16th century castle.

This Patagonia jacket was a last minute purchase before our trip (like I bought it three days before we left!) When I saw it on sale for half price, I couldn't pass it up! It's bright pink (so me) and insulated. It claims to remain warm even when wet, so I figured it would be great for rainy fall days in Scotland. Only problem is while it looks cold, it was actually really warm in Scotland our entire trip (17-21 celsius). The jacket did keep me dry so I was happy to see it deliver on their promise.

Once the rain really started to come down, we hid for a while in the Harbour Cottage Gallery. The artist in residence, Lisa Hooper, has some beautiful framed paintings of local wildlife. I fell in love with a wintery scene with a robin (robins are found quite often in Christmas items in the UK) and AMH liked a series of hares. I would have loved to bring them home with us but we had no room left in our luggage (I confess I did not pack light for this trip!)

Lunch was at the Selkirk Arms Hotel. Last year we ate at the local fish and chip shop (the best in all of the UK!) but they were closed for the week of our visit. No matter, I had wanted to try eating at Selkirk anyway!

The interior is just what you would imagine a traditional Scottish pub-style restaurant to be. Complete with tartan carpet and all!

After so much walking and exploring I was really looking forward to filling up on steak pie with red wine sauce and chips. Everyone in town knows this is the place to get a steak pie from and I can see why! It was delicious and filling. Everything I was looking for.

  1. Looks absolutely beautiful...even in the rain. Where did you get the jacket? I did an MBA project about Patagonia...great company. But I don't actually know where to buy it besides online!
