Why I started working out with a personal trainer

The short answer of why I started working out with a personal trainer is that I never would have been able to accomplish a double bosu plank on my own.

As for the long answer...

A little more than a year ago I made a conscious decision to get healthy and get in shape. Something that I didn't know was as you age you need to work out to build strong bones and you need to decrease the amount of calories you eat. This is especially true for women.

I was pretty athletic as a kid and aside from the occasional run with my son and dog I wasn't following any sort of regular schedule. I knew I needed outside help and decided to look at my options.

As luck would have it a bright and shiny new gym opened up just down the street from me. I thought long and hard about the costs associated (buy in, monthly, cost to break contract, cost of additional classes, etc.) and about the environment (mostly very in shape women and body building men) and I knew this was not for me. I had taken a 10 week bootcamp with a girlfriend before her wedding and thought that might be the way to go. I decided to search Kijiji for another bootcamp and I came across my now trainers ad. I knew after seeing Crystal's website I wanted to met her.

What I saw on her site was fitness devoted to women. That made me feel comfortable. I saw someone who was engaged on social media and seemed to be very knowledgable on the subject, ok another check mark and then I saw the variety of offerings. I could work out as a group, a small class or as a private session. Bingo. Once I saw the private option I knew that was something I had been looking for, I just didn't know it.

I messaged her and we set up a time to meet. After our meeting I was so excited to get started. She was warm and caring, someone I instantly felt comfortable with. Which is a very good thing to watch for as your trainer will see you, warts and all.

Fast forward a year later and we are still working out on our same schedule, once a week for an hour, and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon. Occasionally I take a yoga class, when school allows, turns out I love yoga! I always thought yoga was only a little more strenuous then a nap but boy was I wrong. It makes me feel stronger and my posture seems better.

The greatest benefit I have received from working with a trainer is not only a dear friend, but someone who focuses on me and my needs. When we first started working out my knees would hurt and she would adjust our workout. It was only recently that I realized I am now doing the moves that once hurt. It's the one on one attention that helped me to learn form, learn what the exercises are called, the names of the muscle groups (which I always forget) and what she recommends I do when I am working out at home.

Every class is different so you never get bored. If there is a move I really don't like or I don't feel it's working the muscles the way it should, she takes it out. If there is something I want to focus on, she will add a move in.

As if all that wasn't enough, she shares tips and tricks with all her clients and anyone who follows her Facebook business page. There are healthy cooking trips, movie nights with healthy snacks and even competitions to cut out the sugar. This is someone who thrives in their environment and truly cares about her clients. She is a great teacher and a great inspiration to me.

That's why I have asked her to partner with me on some Health & Fitness posts for my blog. Crystal will be sharing some weight training moves in an upcoming series and we are working on a few other blog post ideas.

But before all that, I wanted to share why I decided to start working out hoping my story might jump start someone else into getting healthy.
