Master Closet DIY

Well I knew this day would come - the day we would have to replace our master closet unit. Our builder installed a very basic shelf and hanging rack that ran the length of our long, yet narrow, master closet. Every time I put something on the shelf I knew it was only a matter of time before it came crashing down, almost like playing Jenga with your clothes.

Rollerball Fragrance

My summer16 scent Tory Burch // Fall scents Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black & White

I am a fragrance lover. I remember asking for my very first bottle of perfume, Cher's Bob Mackie, it was Christmas and I was 8 or 9 years old. I remember being even younger than that and smelling the bottle of Polo Ralph Lauren (the big green bottle) of cologne my mom bought for my dad. The smell of musk and leather always makes me feel like a little kid. I wear perfume even if I am just getting up to do laundry. It's a habit, part of my morning routine and for a few seconds of everyday I have a little moment of luxury all to myself. I like to change my scent with the seasons and it has been an expensive habit, until now. Enter Rollerball fragrance.

Welcome Fall

To celebrate the arrival of Autumn, I am sharing a few of my favourite fall looks from last year. I couldn't be more excited for the start of my favourite season and I'm looking forward to sharing new classic fall looks on the blog this year. I just need the darn temperature to drop (it's high 20's here)!

Pickled Garlic Jalapenos

It's pickling season at my house! This is the first year of our vegetable garden (look for that in a future blog post) and at this point we are harvesting every weekend. We have 12 tomato plants, a gigantic cucumber plant (unfortunately with only male flowers, so no cukes this year), lots of herbs, peppers and our especially well producing jalapeno plants. Since the beginning of September we have been harvesting our jalapenos each weekend (and a few times in between for dinner) and have spent some time during the weekend pickling them.

Fall Polish

While I don't get out for manicures as much as I would like, I do make an effort to paint my nails every week. I don't have a set day for changing my polish but rather I make time when the need arises (meaning last week's polish is all chipped). Last night was just such a night and while removing my summery pink, I reached for one of my all time favourite fall polishes, Essie's Bahama Mama. It's such a deep plum and absolutely perfect for fall. It works well with white, black and grey clothing (standard fall neutrals) and I love how the colour changes slightly from a vibrant plum in the sunlight to a deep, almost black shade in the dark. It's a very moody colour and perfect for those of us that are wishing fall weather would hurry up! But, dark shades are not the only fall polish colours I wear and this season is bringing us many light coloured offerings!

How I'm Getting Organized

How I'm getting organized but first...pie!

It's no secret I wear many hats - wife, mom, full time worker, blogger - but it was only recently that I shared that I am also attending university. I didn't realize how little I really do talk about it until a friend was over for dinner and she said she had no idea I was in school! I've been in school for four years now and it has always usually been manageable with all my other activities. That is changing a bit this coming fall semester. I take one course each semester, with 3 semesters in a calendar year. I only need to be on campus one night a week and I use my weekends for reading and assignments. This fall I am taking a social media class (yippee!) BUT it is twice a week. That's two nights a week on campus, after working a full time job, and trying to coordinate two teenagers who have a lot of after school activities. There are part time jobs, volunteering placements, prepping for university applications, piano and drum lessons and that's before you even include any school groups (every year I drive The Oldest to meet his track team at 6am, everyday until the snow flies!).

Celebrating my blog's anniversary last night with champs, cupcakes and sparklers! We enjoyed the beautiful cotton candy sunset from our porch and then ran inside as we were getting eaten alive by mosquitos! #Keepingitreal

Today I am celebrating two years of blogging on Celebrating This Life! After 376 blog posts (and almost as many sitting in draft status) I am happy to say that I have more passion for this "hobby" today than ever before! I hope you enjoy the mix of things I post here, truly all the things I love!

Powder Room Inspiration

Last week we had a day or two where the weather actually dropped below 20 degrees (that is a distant memory with the 35 degrees we had yesterday!) and that had me in total fall mode! I wanted to pull out sweaters, make something in the crock pot (actually my mom did that and it was delicious!), and get my fall to-do list on the go. I had intended to do a front hall foyer makeover this summer but with the extreme heat, painting was the last thing on my mind. The humidity was so bad this summer I don't think any paint would have dried anyway! Now that my favourite season is here I am back on the makeover train but this time, it's my powder room that I am looking at.

I found this powder room on Pinterest (where else!) and struggle to find the original source (the only downside to Pinterest). The second I saw that wallpaper I knew that was what I wanted for my powder room! My home is kept quite neutral because I like to swap out seasonal items but I really want to go wild in my little bathroom. I am so in love with the wallpaper and wonder if this is something I can recreate by hand with paint. Maybe freehand or find a stencil?

Back to School (...for mom too!)

It's back to school season for the kids and for those of us that happen to be mature students. Today I am back on campus for the 4th year...I have 6 more to go! I am working on a 3 year BA that will take 10 years to complete. I could complete the degree sooner but it would mean even more work that I am already doing and with a full time job, this blog and managing my family, I just can't take on anymore. So I take one class at a time, three semesters a year (Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer). So basically, I am always in school. I usually get a 3-4 week break between my final exam and next class which is when I spend time catching up on books of the non-textbook variety, and coming up with ideas for this blog.

Goodbye Summer '16

You were the summer of

Finally getting the deck styled (Colton approves!)

Road trips

Exploring new places in Ontario (Flowerpot Island)

And antiquing in New York State.

Endless country roads in our 1966 Mercury

And getting to see the Bean boot up close and personal.

The first piano recital

My husband made his first peanut butter pie (he's famous for them now!)

Getting the dogs a pool to beat the extreme heat

Going back to vinyl

Celebrating Canada Day at the museum

And crossing off "Hang a Canadian flag on the porch" off our to-do list.

It was the summer I became obsessed with La Croix

And the family went bowling in a small town up north.

AMH and I found a new place downtown to pass the time while The Youngest is at his drum lesson

And I learned all about Natural Disasters at The Museum.

Then, we meet a soup nazi

Bought a lot of summer flowers

And finished Summer 16 with a sunset.

Goodbye Summer '16. You were a lot of fun but it's time for my favourite season, fall!

What was your favourite Summer '16 memory?

So Long Summer

Happy Labour Day weekend! Wishing you a long weekend filled with family, sunsets and bonfires.

Blue Striped Tank

Outfit | Striped tank top: Banana Republic | Shorts: Lilly Pulitzer | Bag: Tory Burch | Scarf: Vintage | Earrings: Gold and pearl drops - a gift from my mom on my wedding day | Nail polish: Essie Blanc | Blush & Bronzer: Bobbi Brown | Mascara: Dior |

If you are following me on Snapchat (Celebr8thislife) you have seen this outfit a few times. I bought this blue striped tank top during a sale at my local Banana Republic earlier this summer. The tank was marked down to $25 from $95! I know, the shopping gods were on my side that day. I have worn the tank with white shorts, navy shorts as I did in the photos above, a pair of white capri pants and blue jeans. It really is a versatile little piece!

After cleaning out my master closet following a major disaster (I'll share more of that and our subsequent master closet reno in a future post) I found all my silk scarves in a box. Why do I store stuff to keep it save and never use it? Anyone else do this? I was inspired to put one of my favourite silk scarves to use after reading one of my new favourite blogs, Audrey A La Mode. She has a great post and You Tube video on tying your silk scarves 5 different ways. The wrist scarf is really, really easy. Fold into a triangle and then fold into a long rectangle, starting with the small point. Wrap around your wrist twice and tie in a simple double knot. All done and super chic!

Enjoy the long weekend everyone!
